Audience Overlap: Competing for the Same People
When two of your own campaigns target the same audience, Meta's auction treats them as competitors — because, functionally, they are.
The problem
A retargeting campaign and a broad prospecting campaign can end up reaching a meaningful share of the same people, especially as prospecting audiences narrow over time toward your best-performing segments — which happen to look a lot like your existing customers. When that happens, your own campaigns compete for the same auction, inflating costs with no corresponding increase in unique reach.
Why it happens
Campaign structure typically grows organically — a new campaign for a new objective, without checking whether its audience overlaps meaningfully with an existing one. Meta's own algorithm doesn't prevent this; it optimizes each campaign independently unless overlap is explicitly checked and managed.
How to detect it manually
Meta's Audience Overlap tool (in Business Manager, under Audiences) directly compares two saved audiences and reports overlap percentage. Run this pairwise across active campaigns targeting similar objectives — overlap above roughly 20-30% is generally worth investigating.
How AdStake identifies it
AdStake reviews audience and campaign targeting data in your Meta Ads export to flag likely overlap between active campaigns, as part of the campaign structure evaluation under the AdStake Assurance Standard™.
Frequently asked questions
Is some audience overlap unavoidable?
Yes — some overlap is normal, especially between prospecting and retargeting. The concern is overlap significant enough that campaigns are meaningfully bidding against each other for the same impressions.
Does audience overlap apply to Google Ads?
The closer Google Ads equivalent is keyword and campaign overlap — see duplicate auctions — since Google Ads targeting is intent-based rather than audience-based.
