Duplicate Auctions: Bidding Against Yourself
One of the few Google Ads problems where the algorithm can't save you — it doesn't know two of your campaigns are actually the same advertiser.
The problem
When two campaigns in the same account target overlapping keywords — a Performance Max campaign and a Search campaign both eligible for the same query, or two Search campaigns with overlapping keyword lists — they enter the same auction against each other. Google doesn't merge them; each competes independently, which can inflate the cost per click for no additional reach, since only one ad shows regardless.
Why it happens
Account structure accumulates over time as new campaigns get added for new initiatives, without anyone checking whether the new campaign's keyword or audience targeting overlaps with an existing one. Performance Max makes this worse because its targeting isn't fully visible, so overlap with a standard Search campaign can go undetected indefinitely.
How to detect it manually
Google Ads' auction insights report shows overlap rate between your own campaigns when you compare them directly. Cross-referencing keyword lists across campaigns manually also surfaces obvious duplication, though it won't catch Performance Max overlap since its keyword targeting isn't exposed.
How AdStake identifies it
AdStake cross-references keyword and campaign targeting across your uploaded campaign data to flag likely duplicate auction risk, including checking Performance Max budget allocation against standard Search campaign overlap where the export data allows.
Frequently asked questions
Is duplicate auction risk always bad?
Not always — sometimes it's a deliberate strategy for auction dominance on a critical term. The issue is when it's unintentional and inflating costs with no corresponding strategic benefit.
Can Performance Max and Search campaigns really compete against each other?
Yes — this is one of the most common and least visible sources of duplicate auction waste, precisely because PMax's targeting isn't fully exposed in standard reporting.
